knitted scarves
wrap around her neck
while legs freeze
beneath leopard-
                               print leggings

canvas shoes
are no comfort
when dealing
with winter’s bite
                               fashion first

water soaks
her felted coat
arms grow numb
from the gnawing
                               wet weather

I stand at
the bus stop in
my raincoat
and gumboots
                         I know better
