My monster is quite unique
With a certain frame of mind
He specialises in fear, you know
The very best of his kind

Although he creaks the floorboards
(jumping up and down)
and flows along the hallway,
not making a sound

And though he wakes kids nightly
steals dreams from their eyes
hides underneath the smallest bed
’til parents say goodbyes

He can’t do much else.

Other monsters change with their child
from dragons, the dark, things that ain’t meek or mild
to, at the flick of a switch, or the drop of a hat
a burglar, surprise mufti day, huge lime green cat

But he doesn’t. He stays the same.

Doing his stunts ’til the kids get game
and the one thing that scares him,
the one point where he’s blind
is that children grow
and he’s left behind.
